Poker Rules for Online and Offline Poker
It is important to be knowledgeable of poker rules if you intend to play both offline and online poker. If you love online poker, you will find that different poker sites have varying sets of rules specific to their site. However, there are some basic rules that you have to remember when playing poker anywhere you want.
Basically, poker is a card game where players place bets based on the combination of cards they have. There is a communal pot consisting of the players' bets, which is awarded either to the player having the highest ranking hand or to the player whose bet is unmatched by opponents.
Poker rules call for forced wagers to start a game
According to poker rules, all poker games start with some forced wager for poker players to compete in. There are two forced wagers in Seven Card Stud, in Texas Hold'em and Omaha, the small blind and big blind are forced wagers.
Before placing a wager, you first have to understand the ranking of hands. Although these poker rules may be a bit confusing to remember at first, you will be able to master them once you know which hand can beat what hand.
The best hand is the Royal Flush with five cards of the same suit, starting with the ace to the ten of cards. Then there is the Straight Flush where cards have to be in numerical order, which is a winning combination. The four-of-a-kind is the next best hand which consists of four cards of the same number.
Poker rules can be easy to understand
The combination of four aces and a king (A-A-A-A-K) is the best hand, and you obviously can't form this hand in the same suit. The Full House follows this card combination which consists of three cards of a similar number, followed by a different numbered pair. A good Full House is the A-A-A-K-K.
The Flush comes next in poker rules, which is a combination of cards of the same suit. The Straight is next, where cards can be of any suit, but the numbers have to follow each other like 3-4-5-6-7 from any suit of cards.
The other winning hands in poker are Three-of-a-kind, Two Pair, One pair and No Pair. These poker rules are easy to understand once you get your pairs worked out. You will be able to play poker, and place wagers with confidence once the basic poker rules are mastered through regular playing.
When playing poker, players place wagers using various actions available to them like:
Check: A player checks if there is no wager in the round, where he passes the action to the next poker player, clockwise from him or her. With a check, the interest in the pot is not forfeited; only the current right to bid is. So if all players check in a round, the round is considered to be complete.
Bet: It is possible for players to bet if there is no wager in the current round. With a bet, the immediate clockwise player can fold, raise or call.
Fold: By folding, it forfeits the entire player's interest in the pot. This player will not be able to wager any more money for the current poker game.
Call: A player can call if there was a wager in the current round of poker. By calling, the player matches the current bet made by opponents.
Raise: It is possible for a player to raise if a wager is placed in the betting round. By raising, the poker player has to add to the amount of the current bet. The next players will then have to call the new value of the bet or raise again thus, increasing the value of the pot.
Poker rules say that betting continues in a round until the person who is seated immediately counterclockwise to the last better or raiser acts. With this act, either the next poker round starts or the hand gets completed.
Get ready for the showdown
The 'showdown' takes place after the last bet or raise of the final betting round to determine who wins the pot. This is when players show their hands one by one. There may be no showdown if no active player calls when a player bets or raises. This is when the betting or raising player wins the full pot amount.
There are some additional rules for online poker. The first thing to remember when playing online poker is to play quickly. There will be no one willing to wait for you for five minutes to join the poker table or make your move. So, if you have any work to be done, even getting drinks, do it before the game starts.
Watch your language while playing poker
It is very important to be kind when playing poker. Though this may be difficult when you are losing or when some people insults you; keep your cool and hold your tongue as your actions may break the game.
Similarly, watch your language when playing online poker as there are many online poker rooms which are against foul language and swearing. If you swear in such online poker rooms, you might end up getting kicked out. Follow these poker rules to fully enjoy the game of poker both online and in the real world.
